New Faculty Q&A: Dr. Ann Klopp

Welcome Ann Klopp, MD, incoming assistant professor.

Headshot of Dr. Ann Klopp

Hometown: Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin

Educational background:
I went to undergrad at the University of Michigan and then returned to Wisconsin for medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  For my residency I moved to Houston to MD Anderson. I stayed there for my faculty position and have been there since that time.  I’ve focused on gynecological cancer treatment, image-guided brachytherapy, and other radiation techniques to improve precision delivery. My lab has studied tumor microenvironment, including microbiome as a predictor of response, and investigated combination therapy with tumor-directed vaccines.

When, and how, did you develop an interest in the field of Radiation Oncology?
In medical school, I rotated with several fabulous female radiation oncologists and was very impressed with the way they combined compassionate patient care with high tech and effective cancer treatments. I think the diverse ways that we spend our time as radiation oncologists is a very appealing part of practicing in our field of medicine.

What attracted you to UW–Madison and the Department of Radiation Medicine?
I’ve long been aware of the amazing reputation of the department and have been interested in returning to Wisconsin. I am so happy to have the opportunity to be part of such an outstanding group with an amazing tradition of making an impact in the field.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am looking forward to getting to know all the faculty and staff in the department. I love brainstorming about research and clinical care and thinking of ways we can improve care for our patients and advance the field overall.

What hobbies or special activities do you enjoy outside of work?
I have three kids that have kept me busy over the years.  The youngest is now in 8th grade at Madison Country Day and the older two are in college here at UW.  I love to play tennis, do pilates, travel (often coupled with work travel) and am embracing the Madison lifestyle of being active and enjoying the outdoors as much as possible.
