Celebrating Karol Huenerberg’s Career in Radiation Oncology and Patient Care

For many patients, the end of cancer treatment is not the end of the journey—it’s the beginning of a new chapter filled with questions, uncertainty and long-term effects. For more than a decade at UW Health, Karol Huenerberg, NP, has been there to guide patients through that chapter and beyond.

Now, after a remarkable 44-year career in healthcare, Karol will retire at the end of June 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by compassion, expertise and lasting relationships.

Karol joined UW Health in 2010 as a nurse practitioner in radiation oncology, where she quickly became a trusted presence for patients with breast and prostate cancer. While much of her work focused on survivorship—caring for patients long after their treatment ended—her role evolved to span the full continuum of care. In recent years, she has worked closely with radiation oncologist John Floberg, MD, supporting patients both during treatment and in complex follow-up care.

That work often meant walking alongside patients through some of their most difficult moments. Karol helped manage patients receiving advanced radiopharmaceutical therapies for metastatic cancer—treatments that can stretch over many months and bring both physical and emotional challenges. She guided patients through not only the clinical aspects of care, but also the impact on their daily lives and families.

Over time, those continuous relationships became a defining part of her practice. Many patients saw her not just as a provider, but as their provider. As one patient shared, “I will really miss Karol as my oncologist. She is so helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant—always has a smile. I wish her a very happy, long and enjoyable retirement.”

Within the department, Karol’s influence extended far beyond the exam room. She brought an essential voice to the department’s quality assurance committee, helping improve care at every stage of the patient journey. She also served as a steady example for newer advanced practice providers, modeling what thoughtful, patient-centered care looks like day in and day out.

For Dr. Floberg and others who worked alongside her, that consistency mattered just as much as her clinical skill. Whether meeting patients independently, collaborating on complex cases, or simply offering guidance to colleagues, Karol was known for her reliability, her warmth and her deep commitment to doing what was best for the patient.

As she prepares to step away from clinic, it’s clear that Karol leaves behind more than a body of work—she leaves a standard. One shaped by trust, continuity and the quiet but powerful impact of showing up for patients year after year.
