Clinic Overview
Resident Training Location Overview
The majority of resident training takes place at the UW University Hospital on the University of Wisconsin main campus and the EastPark Medical Center on the east side of Madison. These are our two main sister sites where the majority of our technologies are housed. Each physics faculty member is primarily based at one site, where their office and main clinical coverage are located, though several faculty regularly provide support across both sites. The physics residents have office space in both locations and will split their time between the two locations depending on their rotation and clinical coverage assignments. While we try to minimize the chance that residents need to go between the two sites in one day, there is a public bus and employee shuttle available that travels between the University Hospital and EastPark.
On rare occasions some resident training will also take place at the Veterans Hospital located on the main campus directly adjacent to the University Hospital and also a satellite UW Cancer Center in Johnson Creek, WI.
Across all UW locations, we treat ~2300 patients per year. A wide range of treatments and special procedures are offered including 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, SRS, SgRT, IgRT, MRgRT, gantry-based and upright proton therapy, TBI, TSET, ventricular tachycardia radioablation, fiducial tracking, HDR & LDR brachytherapy, radiopharmaceutical therapy, MR-sim, 4DCT, dual energy CT, respiratory gating, and online adaptive RT.

Clinic Locations
Department of Radiation Medicine has four different locations with state of the art technology for a variety of treatments.

UW Health University Hospital (UH)
Address: 600 Highland Avenue, Madison, WI
The UW Health University Hospital (“UH”) is located on the University of Wisconsin main campus. Physics residents spend about half their time at UH and have a dedicated shared office space within the department.
Technology at this location:
- 3 TrueBeam Linacs (1 STx)
- 1 Accuray TomoTherapy HDA
- 1 ViewRay MRidian Linac
- 2 Flexitron HDRs
- 1 CT on-wheels
- 1 MR Simulator (1.5T)
- 1 CT Simulator

UW Health Eastpark Medical Center (EMC)
Address: 4621 Eastpark Blvd, Madison, WI 53718. Located about 30 minutes from the University Hospital.
Our department is vibrant and growing with opening of our dual-hub UW Health Cancer Center, Eastpark Medical Center location, located on Madison’s east side. The 469,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility opened in October 2024. Residents spend about half their time at EastPark and have a large, shared office space that they share with the physician residents and the medical physics assistants.
Technology at this location:
- 3 TrueBeam Linacs
- 1 Upright Proton Room
- 1 Gantry Proton Room
- 1 Flexitron HDR
- 1 CT-on-rails
- 1 MR Simulator (1.5T)
- 1 CT Simulator
In 2026, we will then go live with two proton therapy rooms which include one Hitachi gantry system and one fixed beam with an upright patient positioning system from Leo Cancer Care.

William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (VA)
Address: 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI 53705. Adjacent to the University Hospital.
Another site where resident education may take place is at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and Clinics. The “VA” is located directly next to the main University Hospital. This VA is not under the UWHealth umbrella but is staffed by UW physicists and physicians.
Technology at this location:
- 1 TrueBeam Linac
- 1 CT Simulator
The delivery systems are matched entirely in hardware, software, and QA and treatment processes to the systems in use at University Hospital. Residents do not have any formal training requirements at the VA hospital but may often use the linac or CT scanner for projects or observations due to the machines being finished treating earlier in the day.

UW Cancer Center – Johnson Creek
Address: 250 Doctors Ct, Johnson Creek, WI 53038. About 1 hour from the University Hospital (and ~30 min from EastPark).
Johnson Creak is staffed by fully by UW faculty and staff and all treatment planning is done centrally by the UW dosimetry team.
Physics residents do not often travel to Johnson Creek except for annual linac QA and one-off unique opportunities like machine commissioning, shielding surveys, or clinical projects.
