Patient Care
Faculty members of the Department of Radiation Medicine are physicians at UW Health | Carbone Cancer Center —one of the nation’s original National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive cancer centers and the only one in Wisconsin. Our team is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care for every patient.
Our physicians are leaders in cancer care and use advanced radiation therapy to treat cancer and other conditions safely and effectively.
We offer comprehensive care using state-of-the-art technology, including techniques developed here in Wisconsin. Each day, we treat more than 200 patients at locations across the region, including University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, Eastpark Medical Center, the Middleton VA Hospital, and affiliated clinics.

Team care
Doctors who specialize in your type of cancer will lead your care. They work with a skilled team—including radiation physicists and dosimetrists—who carefully plan your treatment, calculate the correct dose, and ensure your safety.
Your care team may also include radiation therapists who deliver treatments, as well as nurses and physician assistants who support you throughout your care. When needed, other specialists—such as physical therapists, dentists, nutritionists, and speech or swallow therapists—join your team to help manage your specific needs.
State-of-the-art treatment approaches
If you have cancer, you can feel confident you’re receiving high-quality care using the latest technology and treatments.
Cancer care often involves a combination of approaches, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Our team works together to choose the best options for you.
UW Health offers some of the most advanced radiation therapies available. Radiation may be used on its own or combined with other treatments. As leaders in this field, we provide access to advanced options offered at only a few centers across the country.
Clinical trials
Clinical trials are research studies that help improve how we prevent, detect, and treat cancer. They play a key role in advancing medical care.
For patients receiving radiation therapy, clinical trials may explore new uses of existing treatments, new drug combinations, or new procedures and technologies. Some studies also focus on quality of life and the impact of cancer on patients and their families.
Your doctor may discuss clinical trial options with you if they are a good fit. Each study has specific eligibility requirements.
When appropriate, we offer access to clinical trials that help shape the future of cancer care. If you’re interested, ask your doctor whether a clinical trial may be right for you.
Palliative care
Palliative care is an important part of cancer care. It focuses on improving quality of life by helping manage pain, side effects, and the physical and emotional challenges of serious illness.
Our team—including physicians, nurses, social workers, and therapists—works together to provide this support. Palliative care can be offered alongside treatments aimed at curing your disease or on its own.
